Project record

One pin, every age group: a club design built to outlast the season

Proof art

A California club asked for the opposite of what most teams want — no year, no age group, no state. One design the whole program could use.

The brief

A club that wanted one pin every age group could use — and got the clearest demonstration in the archive of why the bigger pin costs less.

How the design got made

Filled marker = the design pivoted
  1. Beat 1

Two separate teams ordered inside the same 2025 season, with different parents buying

  2. Beat 2

Customer asked for a deliberately generic club pin: 'No need to include 2025 or 8u or California… a generic Antelope Valley Coyotes pin would be best for us'

  3. Beat 3

The rep asked the event question directly, and the answer was USSSA IWS, not Cooperstown

  4. Beat 4

Both banner tiers quoted side by side: $1.07 at 1.75 inches with nothing, $1.27 at 2.0 with a banner and 100 bonus pins

The full account

The request nobody else makes

Almost every team wants their pin to say exactly who they are this season: the year, the age group, the state, the roster. This club wanted none of it.

"No need to include 2025 or 8u or California. We are hoping to use this design for all of our age groups so a generic Antelope Valley Coyotes pin would be best for us."

That's a program thinking past July. A dated pin is a keepsake of one trip. An undated one is club identity — order it once, use it across every team, reorder it next year off the same die without paying to redraw anything.

Where they were trading

Asked what event the pins were for, the answer was specific:

"We are trading at the USSSA International World Series."

Worth stating plainly because the paperwork on this job says Cooperstown, and it wasn't Cooperstown. USSSA runs its own major tournaments and they draw the same trading culture — the pins matter just as much, and the volume is just as high.

The size decision, quoted in the open

At a thousand pins the customer was shown both options side by side:

1.75 inch 2.0 inch
Per pin $1.07 $1.27
Banner Free 3ft × 6ft
Bonus pins 100 gold or blackout

Twenty cents a pin. Two hundred dollars across the order. That buys a banner and a hundred extra pins, and the larger size is the one that trades better anyway.

Put like that, it stops being an upsell and starts being arithmetic.

Three years, three parents

This club has come back across three seasons, and the person placing the order has changed more than once. Two different teams inside the program ordered in the same season with different families handling each.

That's what a generic design is really for. When the buyer changes, the design doesn't have to.

This order sat under the threshold, so no banner was included. At the time the line fell at 1,000 pins at 2.0 inches or larger: the size step cost $0.20 more per pin — $1.07 to $1.27 — and brought a free 3ft × 6ft banner plus 100 bonus gold-metal or blackout pins with it.

Worth checking before you commit to a quantity: the bigger pin is frequently the cheaper total order.

Questions this order answers

USSSA events are a regular trading destination for the teams we work with, and the International World Series in particular.

Some clubs deliberately leave the event, year and age group off the pin so one design works across every team in the program. One California club asked for exactly that: a generic club pin rather than a dated one.
