The full account
The question
Partway through the design, the customer raised something that comes up on most orders and gets recorded on almost none:
"they could purchase additional pins besides the the Team's order of a player's number. Is there a minimal number of pins required for an order?"
Families want their own. Not to trade — to keep. A grandparent wants one, a sibling wants one, a parent wants one that never leaves the drawer.
The two ways to handle it
Order extras up front. This team quoted 150 and ordered 165. The marginal pins cost only the pins — the mould, the set-up and the freight are already paid for. Fifteen spare pins on a 150-pin order is close to free.
Or run a second order later, which is the expensive route: a new set-up on a very small quantity, at a unit price nothing like the first run's, and a lead time that will not beat the tournament.
The first way is almost always right. If families are likely to want extras — and they usually are — decide that before the order goes in.

The design carries the roster's jersey numbers set into a baseball: 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 22, 23, 28, 99.
That creates a real constraint, and it was flagged:

Fifteen cents between them — and at 1.75 inch, nine numbers plus a logo plus a team name plus a year is a lot to fit legibly.

A material note
These are zinc alloy rather than iron — a slightly different base metal, softer to strike, which holds fine detail a little better. Worth knowing when a design has small elements like a row of jersey numbers.

The banner threshold
This order sat under the threshold, so no banner was included. At the time the line fell at 1,000 pins at 2.0 inches or larger: the size step cost $0.20 more per pin — $1.07 to $1.27 — and brought a free 3ft × 6ft banner plus 100 bonus gold-metal or blackout pins with it.

Questions this order answers
USSSA events are a regular trading destination for the teams we work with, and the International World Series in particular.
Some clubs deliberately leave the event, year and age group off the pin so one design works across every team in the program. One California club asked for exactly that: a generic club pin rather than a dated one.

Numbers need contrast to stay legible at pin scale. White numbers on a dark element such as a black puck is a reliable pattern. Send the full roster with numbers when you send artwork, and tell us straight away if the roster changes.

Two inches or larger is the working floor for tournament trading — smaller pins get passed over. Sizes run from 2 inches up to 6.
One little league's four orders across three years show the migration in practice: they started at 1.25 inches and moved to 2.0. Larger sizes also unlock the banner threshold, which is why the bigger pin often costs less in total.

Quantity and size move it most: the break runs about $0.20 per pin for every hundred pins, and the range here goes from a 1,500-pin corporate run at 1.25 inch to a 3 inch dangler with glitter. Pin type and finish are priced per pin on top of that — a spinner was $0.65 more per pin on one order, glitter is $0.10 per pin per glitter colour.
Timing is separate again. Six weeks ahead of your date carries no delivery or rush charge; four weeks adds a $40 delivery charge; three weeks adds $40 plus a $75 rush fee. The pins are manufactured in China and are subject to US import tariffs, disclosed on the quote rather than at invoice.
