Project record

Six hundred pins, and the whole decision was about glitter

The largest softball order in the library at 600 pins. The customer went back and forth on glitter, so we rendered it both ways before she committed.

The brief

Six hundred two-and-a-half inch pins, and the only thing holding the order up was whether they should have glitter.

The full account

The largest softball order on file

Six hundred pins at two and a half inches. The enquiry arrived through the quote form with the size already decided, and the price came back the same morning: $2.35 a pin at that quantity.

Then it stalled — not on price, and not on the artwork.

"I feel it might look better without?"

The customer was weighing glitter, and she said so:

"I was going back and forth about glitter, but I feel it might look better without?"

Note the question mark. She was not telling us her decision; she was thinking out loud and inviting a second opinion on a design she was about to buy six hundred of.

The reply did not argue for the upsell:

"We can have artist add glitter so you can see it both ways. Each glitter would be $0.10 per glitter color."

Both ways. Ten cents a colour. Look at it and decide.

Two days later the purchase order was raised.

Why this one is here

It is the clearest example in the library of the proof process being used to decide rather than to fix. Nothing was wrong with the design. The customer simply wanted to see the alternative before spending on six hundred units, and the fastest way to settle it was to draw it.

The thread does not record which version she finally approved, so this page does not claim one. What it does record is how the question got answered — by rendering it, not by arguing about it.

This order sat under the threshold, so no banner was included. At the time the line fell at 1,000 pins at 2.0 inches or larger: the size step cost $0.20 more per pin — $1.07 to $1.27 — and brought a free 3ft × 6ft banner plus 100 bonus gold-metal or blackout pins with it.

Worth checking before you commit to a quantity: the bigger pin is frequently the cheaper total order.

What the customer said

Questions this order answers

Glitter is a finish, so it applies to any pin type — standard, spinner or slider alike. It is mixed into the enamel of a chosen colour rather than applied on top, so it will not rub off.

It is specified per colour: one glitter colour, or several. Commonly it lands on a single accent area — the shape of a state, a star, a puck. A 1,500-pin association order ran one glitter colour across the whole run; another design used gold glitter only on the state-shaped element.
