The brief

Six prices on the table at once — two sizes across three quantities — and an 8U team picked the middle of the ladder.

How the design got made

Filled marker = the design pivoted
  1. Beat 1

Quoted 2.5 inch and 3 inch side by side, at 300, 400 and 500

  2. Beat 2

Every step down in quantity cost twenty cents more per pin, at both sizes

  3. Beat 3

Chose 2.5 inch at 400, the middle rung

  4. Beat 4

Ordered with one glitter colour, proof V1A

The full account

The whole ladder, up front

Most suppliers give you one price and wait for you to push back. This quote gave the customer everything at once:

Quantity 2.5 inch 3 inch
300 $2.90 $3.90
400 $2.70 $3.70
500 $2.50 $3.50

Read down either column and the pattern is exact: twenty cents a pin for every hundred you add, and it holds at both sizes. Read across and the 3 inch build costs a flat dollar more than the 2.5 inch at every quantity.

There is no negotiation in that table. It is just what the numbers are.

What they chose

The team took the middle rung — 2.5 inch at 400 pins, $2.70 each — with one glitter colour, proof V1A. Ordered six days after the quote went out.

Stepping up from 300 to 400 cost them $2.70 × 400 rather than $2.90 × 300: eighty more pins for two hundred dollars, or $2.50 for each additional pin against a headline price of $2.90. That is usually the right side of the trade for an 8U team that will hand pins out all weekend.

This is the first record in the library filed under USSSA as a category in its own right, rather than beneath a sport. That reflects how the work is actually organised — USSSA runs its own tournament circuit across baseball and softball, and teams heading to one behave like a distinct segment with their own timing.

This order sat under the threshold, so no banner was included. At the time the line fell at 1,000 pins at 2.0 inches or larger: the size step cost $0.20 more per pin — $1.07 to $1.27 — and brought a free 3ft × 6ft banner plus 100 bonus gold-metal or blackout pins with it.

Worth checking before you commit to a quantity: the bigger pin is frequently the cheaper total order.

Questions this order answers

USSSA events are a regular trading destination for the teams we work with, and the International World Series in particular.

Some clubs deliberately leave the event, year and age group off the pin so one design works across every team in the program. One California club asked for exactly that: a generic club pin rather than a dated one.
