The brief

Two girls' teams, two designs, one purchase order — and a better rate than either would have got alone.

How the design got made

Filled marker = the design pivoted
  1. Beat 1

12UA and 12UB from the same club, each wanting its own design

  2. Beat 2

    Quoted across three quantity steps at 2 inch: 100 at $3.18, 150 at $2.88, 200 at $2.60

  3. Beat 3

Neither team alone reached the 200 break - 104 and 185 pins

  4. Beat 4

Ordered together on one purchase order as two designs

  5. Beat 5

Dyed black metal plating rather than nickel, on a five-colour palette

The full account

Two teams, two designs

The Hutchinson Tigers 12UA and 12UB girls' teams both wanted pins, and both wanted their own design. Not a shared club pin with a different line of text — two distinct designs.

The quantities were the problem:

  • 12UA — 104 pins
  • 12UB — 185 pins

The ladder

Quoted at two inch across three quantity steps:

Quantity Per pin
100 $3.18
150 $2.88
200 $2.60

Look at what that means for each team alone. 12UA at 104 pins sits on the worst rung. 12UB at 185 is close to the best but doesn't reach it.

Together they are 289 pins.

One purchase order, two designs

They ordered as one job: PO#[redacted], two proofs, 104 of one and 185 of the other.

Both teams got their own design and the better rate. The moulds are still two — a mould is per design, and nothing changes that — but the freight is one shipment instead of two, the order clears the price break, and the club handles one invoice.

This is the most underused move in youth sports pin buying. Clubs run multiple teams in the same season, all of them ordering separately, all of them sitting one rung below a break they could reach by picking up the phone to each other.

The question that started it

"You only need 100 total for the whole team ??"

Asked early, before anything was designed. It is the right question, and it opened the conversation that put the two teams on one order.

The finish

Two inch, die struck, soft enamel, on dyed black metal rather than nickel — a darker base that makes the five-colour palette sit brighter against it.

Four weeks of design across two teams, ordered 10 November, delivered early December.

Why this one is here

Because the quantity ladder is usually treated as a decision about how many pins one team needs. It is really a question about how many the club needs — and the answer is often one rung up.

This order sat under the threshold, so no banner was included. At the time the line fell at 1,000 pins at 2.0 inches or larger: the size step cost $0.20 more per pin — $1.07 to $1.27 — and brought a free 3ft × 6ft banner plus 100 bonus gold-metal or blackout pins with it.

Worth checking before you commit to a quantity: the bigger pin is frequently the cheaper total order.

What the customer said

Verbatim from the order thread
“You only need 100 total for the whole team ??”

Customer, Hutchinson Tigers Girls Hockey · 2024-10-14 · on the question that led to the two teams ordering together

Questions this order answers

No. Every figure in this library is what one team was quoted for one order, on the day they asked. It is published as a record, not as a price list.

Quantity and size move it most: the break runs about $0.20 per pin for every hundred pins, and the range here goes from a 1,500-pin corporate run at 1.25 inch to a 3 inch dangler with glitter. Pin type and finish are priced per pin on top of that — a spinner was $0.65 more per pin on one order, glitter is $0.10 per pin per glitter colour.

Timing is separate again. Six weeks ahead of your date carries no delivery or rush charge; four weeks adds a $40 delivery charge; three weeks adds $40 plus a $75 rush fee. The pins are manufactured in China and are subject to US import tariffs, disclosed on the quote rather than at invoice.
