The full account
The change that cost almost nothing
The design was specified at 250 pins. The order that went in was 350:
"Ok to proceed with order of 350 qty. Send tracking number as soon as you have it"
An extra hundred pins, decided at the moment of ordering, costs the extra hundred pins. The mould is already paid for, the set-up is already scheduled, the shipment is already going.
The same decision two weeks later is a different animal. Running another hundred as a separate order means a second set-up on a very small quantity, at a unit price nothing like the first run's — and a second lead time, which for a hockey season usually means the pins arrive after the thing they were made for.
Teams almost always underestimate. Pins get lost, traded, given to siblings, kept by coaches, handed to the parents who drove the van. The number that felt generous in September runs out in November.
If you are hesitating between two numbers, the moment to take the larger one is before the order goes in.
Silver, not nickel
Most pins here are nickel plated. This one is silver — brighter and cooler, a harder white than nickel's slightly warm grey.
It is a small difference in isolation and an obvious one side by side, particularly where the plating shows as line work between enamel colours rather than as a border.
Rubber backs
Two butterfly clutches with rubber backs. On a two-inch pin, one clutch lets it swing; two hold it square. Rubber over bare metal is what stops it working loose over a season.

The banner threshold
This order sat under the threshold, so no banner was included. At the time the line fell at 1,000 pins at 2.0 inches or larger: the size step cost $0.20 more per pin — $1.07 to $1.27 — and brought a free 3ft × 6ft banner plus 100 bonus gold-metal or blackout pins with it.
Worth checking before you commit to a quantity: the bigger pin is frequently the cheaper total order.

Quantity and size move it most: the break runs about $0.20 per pin for every hundred pins, and the range here goes from a 1,500-pin corporate run at 1.25 inch to a 3 inch dangler with glitter. Pin type and finish are priced per pin on top of that — a spinner was $0.65 more per pin on one order, glitter is $0.10 per pin per glitter colour.
Timing is separate again. Six weeks ahead of your date carries no delivery or rush charge; four weeks adds a $40 delivery charge; three weeks adds $40 plus a $75 rush fee. The pins are manufactured in China and are subject to US import tariffs, disclosed on the quote rather than at invoice.
